The Basics of Poker

Origin of poker

There is some debate about the origin of poker, with some historians claiming it came from the Persian game As-Nas (16th c.). Other historians argue that poker evolved from a variety of other games over the centuries.

Types of poker

There are several different types of poker games. Some don’t fit neatly into any of the categories and others combine aspects of several different types. Most poker games are played at home and are part of a dealer’s choice format.

Stakes in poker

Stakes in poker are a term used in poker to describe the amount a player can bet. These can range from small blinds to big blinds, and they are typically expressed as amounts of money that are referred to as “blinds” or “buy-ins.” The amount of money that each player is allowed to bet is also referred to as a player’s “stake.” Stakes are important because they limit a player’s potential losses and protect his bankroll.
