When the round is over, all of the bets are placed in a central pot. A showdown occurs when all of the players’ hands are revealed and the winning hand is decided. The winning hand is the highest-ranking hand, but not necessarily the highest-valued. Alternatively, two identical hands can tie and the highest unmatched card breaks the tie.
In some versions, the dealer may shuffle the deck at the end of the game. In other versions, a player can discard some of his or her cards to give the deck a fresh look. A pot can be won by making the highest-ranking poker hand, bluffing, or by betting the least. The pot can also be won by a player who makes a bet that no other player calls.
In some poker variants, the highest-ranking card in the deck is a kicker. The kicker is the highest-ranking card that is still in the deck after a hand has been completed. For example, in a high-card hand, the kicker might be the fifth card. Some games may not consider a kicker, and other games do not award a pot to a straight or flush.
When a player suspects that a bettor is bluffing, he or she can “call” a bluff. This is done by putting in the necessary chips to call the previous bet. The player can then either fold, bet more, or raise the bet.
Some games feature deuces wild, which is a poker variant that allows players to draw a second card. This is a variant that is considered a poker trick because it is not necessarily the most common or useful poker trick.
